Pieter Ombregt

Just received the saddest news while here in Germany from back home. Pieter Ombregt, a photographer here in Chicago just passed away in a random accident while in bicycle race in Chicago.
Greg and I included Pieter’s work in the first Versionfest Photographer invitational and most recently I sat in on a critique with Pieter and we had a long discussion of his newest project.
Those that knew Pieter recall the tall handsome and athletic Belgian with a very gentle disposition. Pieter’s character became the subject and form for many of his photographs in which he combined self portraits within modernist urbanscapes. When we met and talked last spring, his newest work took this simple idea into a new and powerful narrative which began to transcend his fascination with modernist architecture by combining performative self portraits in the eerie night streets of Chicago. I don’t have examples of this work but you can see earlier work on his website here.
It’s so sad to hear of young Pieter’s (27) life cut short. I have no doubt he would have accomplished much as he had already in his photographs, professional bicycle racing and I’m sure a host of other talents. Pieter’s passing reminds us our time is short on this planet and our days should be filled with living our lives to the fullest.
You can read more about Pieter here on a bicycle message forum.
Pieter, you’ll be sadly missed.

Pieter was a friend for life- and not just for me. His courage, his power, the softness in his eyes, his lust for life made him a person to love unconditionally, as much as he himself loved life.
Pieter died as he lived: flying.
The pain his death causes is terrible. My thougths are with his family and his fiancee. This terrible loss is shared with people in the States as well as in Belgium.
    Vaarwel, mijn lieve vriend.
    Het doet zo’n zeer.

    Ombi,my friend.
It’s been too long since we saw each other…but I still remember the good times we had in boarding school and the trip to Spain as if it was yesterday. Pieter was all energy and enthusiasm. He was a dreamer,a romantic with his head in the clouds…but he did everything to make his dreams come true, despite of what other people said. That was one thing that made him so special. And now that everything was falling into place,he’s taken away from us…
Het is niet eerlijk dromer, maar we zullen je nooit vergeten!
